Wages and salaries are defined as the hourly straight-time wage rate.For workers not paid on an hourly basis, straight-time earnings are dividedby the hours worked. Straight-time wage
and salary rates are totalearnings before payroll deductions and include production bonuses,incentive pay, commissions, and cost-of-living allowances. Not included instraight-time
earnings are nonproduction bonuses, such as lump-sum paymentsprovided in place of wage increases, shift differentials, and premium payfor overtime and weekend work; these payments are
included in the benefitscomponent.
Benefits include: paid leave--vacations, holidays, sick leave, andother leave; supplemental pay--premium pay for work in addition to theregular work schedule (such as overtime,
weekends, and holidays), shiftdifferentials, nonproduction bonuses, and lump sum payments provided inplace of wage increases; insurance--life, health, short-term disability,and
long-term disability; retirement and savings--defined benefit anddefined contribution plans; legally required benefits--Social Security,Federal and State unemployment insurance, and
workers' compensation; andother benefits--severance pay and supplemental unemployment benefits.
Employer Costs for Employee Compensation include data from bothprivate industry and State and local government. Not included are the self-employed and farm, household, and Federal
government workers. Survey dataare published annually with the payroll period that includes March 12 asthe reference period.
