603. Households Receiving Means-Tested Noncash Benefits

[In thousands (82,368 represents 82,368,000), except percent. Households as of March of followingyear. Covers civilian noninstitutional population, includingpersons in the Armed Forces living off post or with their familieson post. A means-tested benefit program requires that thehousehold's income and/or assets fall below specified guidelines inorder to qualify for benefits. The means-tested noncash benefitscovered are food stamps, free or reduced-price school lunches,public or subsidized housing, and medicaid. There are generaltrends toward underestimation of noncash beneficiaries.
