*SEMICONDUCTORS AND ELECTRONIC COMPONENTS
PURPOSE
To provide detailed data on quantity and total value of shipments of semiconductors and related components. The UnitedStates Code, Title 13, authorizes this survey and provides for
mandatory responses.
COVERAGE
Companies with 20 or more employees that manufacture semiconductors, printed circuit boards, and other electroniccomponents (most but not all SIC 3671, 3672, 3674-3679). In 1993, the
total value of shipments of these firms amounted toover $70 billion.
CONTENT
Product data are collected for over 200 types of semiconductors and related components including resistors, capacitors, andprinted circuit boards. Data at the 7-digit SIC level include
quantity and value of shipments.
FREQUENCY
Annually; reported data are for activities taking place during the previous calendar year. Data on selected electronic andassociated products have been collected since 1961.
METHODS
A mail-out/mail-back survey of all 2,383 known manufacturers. Companies are identified from the latest census ofmanufactures, Standard Statistical Establishment List, and private
sources. Firms are contacted using form MA36Q. Data maybe revised if firms later provide corrected data. Annual data are compared with data from the latest annual survey ofmanufactures
to reconcile any differences between the two series. No estimates are derived for the small firms excluded fromthe survey.
