*INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINES
PURPOSE
To provide detailed data on quantity and total value of shipments of selected internal combustion engines. The United StatesCode, Title 13, authorizes this survey and provides for
mandatory responses.
COVERAGE
All firms engaged in manufacturing internal combustion engines in the U.S. (most but not all are in SIC 3519), except outboard, aircraft, military tank, and non-diesel automotive
engines. In 1993, the value of shipments of these products totaled nearly $8billion.
CONTENT
Product data are collected for over 15 types of engines. Data at the 7-digit SIC level include production, total value ofshipments and quantities shipped by end use and application.
Further data are collected on engines' fuel system (gasoline, diesel, natural gas), engine displacement and horsepower.
FREQUENCY
Annually; reported data are for activities taking place during the previous calendar year. Data on internal combustion engineshave been collected since 1943.
METHODS
A mail-out/mail-back survey of all 38 known manufacturers. Firms are identified from the latest census of manufactures and theStandard Statistical Establishment List, and are contacted
using form MA35L. Data may be revised if firms later providecorrected data. Annual figures are compared with data collected from the annual survey of manufactures to reconcile
anydifferences between the two series.
*REFRIGERATION AND HEATING EQUIPMENT
PURPOSE
To provide detailed data on quantity and total value of shipments of selected products. The United States Code, Title 13,authorizes this survey and provides for mandatory responses.
COVERAGE
All firms that manufacture refrigeration, air-conditioning equipment, and nonelectric warm air furnaces (most but not all are inSIC 3585). In 1993, the value of shipments of these
products exceeded $14 billion.
CONTENT
Product data are collected on over 100 types of cooling and heating equipment. Data at the 7-digit SIC level include quantityand value of shipments. Data are also collected on the
quantity of compressors produced.
FREQUENCY
Annually; reported data are for activities taking place during the previous calendar year. Data on air-conditioning andrefrigeration have been collected since 1944.
METHODS
A mail-out/mail-back survey of all 271 known manufacturers. Firms are identified from the latest census of manufactures,Standard Statistical Establishment List, and private sources.
Firms are contacted using form MA35M. Data may be revised iffirms later provide corrected data. Annual data are compared with data collected from the latest annual survey of
manufacturesto reconcile any differences between the two series. *PUMPS AND COMPRESSORS
PURPOSE
To provide detailed data on quantity and total value of shipments of selected pump and compressor products. The UnitedStates Code, Title 13, authorizes this survey and provides for
mandatory responses.
COVERAGE
Companies manufacturing industrial pumps and compressors in the U.S. (most but not all are in SIC 3561 and 3563), exceptsmall firms (generally less than 5 employees). In 1993, shipments
by these manufacturers' amounted to over $6 billion.
CONTENT
Product data are collected for over 100 types of pumps and compressors. Data at the 7-digit SIC level include quantity andvalue of shipments.
FREQUENCY
Annually, reported data are for activities taking place during the year. Data on pumps and compressors have been collectedsince 1960.
METHODS
A mail-out/mail-back survey of 500 manufacturers. Companies are identified from the latest census of manufactures,Standard Statistical Establishment List, and private sources. Firms are
contacted using form MA35P. Data may be revised iffirms later provide corrected data. Annual data are compared with data collected from the latest annual survey ofmanufactures to
reconcile any differences between the two series. No estimates are derived for small firms excluded fromthe survey.
