al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM):
aim(s): replace the Chadian Government with Sharia and, ultimately, create a regional Islamic caliphate across all of North and West Africa
area(s) of operation: members transit the country smuggling weapons and contraband in the northwestern regions, primarily near the Chad-Niger border; clashes with Nigerien Military forces patrolling the border
Boko Haram:
aim(s): replace the Chadian Government with an Islamic state and, ultimately, establish an Islamic caliphate across Africa; violently opposes any political or social activity associated with Western society, including voting, attending secular schools, and wearing Western dress
area(s) of operation: conducts kidnappings, bombings, and assaults, including in the capital, N'Djamena; targets Military personnel and civilians; responsible for displacing thousands of people and contributing to food insecurity, especially in the country's Lake Chad Basin region, where the Chadian Government has imposed a state of emergency since 2015 because of Boko Haram's frequent attacks; conducted its first lethal attack in Chad on 13 February 2015, when operatives crossed Lake Chad by boat to attack Ngouboua, a fishing village on the shores of Lake Chad in Chad, killing approximately 10 civilians and burning two thirds of the homes in the village; Chad continued in 2017 to participate in the Joint Multinational Force's military offensives against Boko Haram
