Surfing, Piha In 1956 two Californians introduced surfing to New Zealand making Piha the country's most famous surf beach and the birthplace of surfing in New Zealand. Piha is infamous for its strong rips and currents which makes swimming between the patrolled areas a must. A reality TV series has even been made documenting the Piha Surf Life Saving Club and its many daily rescues.
