Kayakers on Waikato River The Waikato River is the longest waterway in New Zealand. Rising on the slopes of Mount Ruapehu in Tongariro National Park, it flows north through Lake Taupo and tumbles over Huka Falls before flowing on to the Tasman Sea. At 425km from start to finish, the river is a natural playground for kayaking, jet boating and paddle steamer cruises.
