Perhaps nothing epitomizes the elegance and charm of Vienna as does its famous ball season. The highlight of the season is the world-famous Vienna State Opera Ball.

Presided over by the President of Austria and attended by royalty, diplomats, international celebrities, literati and glitterati, the ball is also a spectacular coming out party for debutantes from Vienna and abroad.

In 1877, the Emperor gave permission for a soiree in his Opera House and the grand opera ball tradition began. Held during Fasching, the weeks between New Years and Mardi Gras, the ball season is a time of high excitement and elaborate planning. The annual State Opera Ball attracts visitors from all over the world. Formal attire is de rigueur: long ball gowns for women, white tie and tails for men.
