* ALUMINUM INGOT AND MILL PRODUCTS

PURPOSE

To provide current detailed data on aluminum products. The United States Code, Title 13, authorizes this survey and provides for voluntary monthly and mandatory annual responses. The Aluminum Association fully funds the monthly survey.

COVERAGE

All firms that produce aluminum ingot or mill products and ship 5 short tons or more per month, produce master alloys, or are engaged in tolling operations (most but not all are in SIC 3354). In 1993, the value of shipments for these firms totaled over $21 billion.

CONTENT

Data are collected for over 15 types of mill products. Ingot data include gross shipments, net shipments, total value of shipments, and ingot and scrap inventories, by type of producer. Mill product data at the 7-digit SIC level include gross shipments, net shipments and total receipts.

FREQUENCY

Monthly and annually; reported data are for activities taking place during the reporting period. Data on aluminum ingot and mill products have been collected since 1942. The M33D is scheduled to be discontinued as of the December 1998 publication. The 1998 summary will be the last publication for this survey.

METHODS

A mail-out/mail-back monthly survey of all 250 known manufacturers; annual reports are required from those companies that do not report monthly. Firms were identified from the latest census of manufactures, annual survey of manufactures, and from industry sources. Presently, firms are contacted using form M33D. Monthly data may be revised if firms later provide corrected data or return the annual report. Annual figures are compared with the data from the annual survey of manufactures to reconcile any differences between the two series.
