1 Estimated, end of year. Source: 1970-1976; American Gas Association,
Arlington, VA (copyright.); thereafter,
U.S. Energy Information Administration,
U.S. Crude Oil, Natural Gas, and Natural Gas Liquids Reserves, annual.
2 Marketed production includes gross withdrawals from reservoirs less
quantities used for reservoir repressuring and quantities vented or
flared. For 1980 and thereafter,
it excludes the nonhydrocarbon gases subsequently removed.
3 Volumetric reduction in natural gas resulting from the extraction of
natural gas constitutents at natural gas processing plants.
4 Includes imports of liquefied natural gas.
5 Beginning with 1980, includes liquefied natural gas (LNG) storage in
above ground tanks.
6 Includes deliveries to municipalities and public authorities for
institutional heating and other purposes.

Definitions
Natural Gas: A mixture of hydrocarbons (principally methane) and
small quantities of various nonhydrocarbons existing in the gaseous
phase or in solution with crude oil in underground reservoirs.
Natural Gas, Dry: The marketable portion of natural gas production,
which is obtained by subtracting extraction losses, including natural gas
liquids removed at natural gas processing plants, from total production.
Natural Gas Gross Withdrawals: Full well stream volume of pro-
duced natural gas, excluding condensate separated at the lease.
Natural Gas Marketed Production: Gross withdrawals of natural
gas from production reservoirs, less gas used for reservoir repressur-
ing; nonhydrocarbon gases removed in treating and processing
operations; and quantities vented and flared.
Proved Reserves, Crude Oil: The estimated quantities of all liquids
defined as crude oil that geological and engineering data demonstrate
with reasonable certainty to be recoverable in future years from
known reservoirs under existing economic and operating conditions.
Extraction Loss: The reduction in volume of natural gas due to the
removal of natural gas constituents, such as ethane, propane, and bu-
tane, at natural gas processing plants.
